Thanks, V-C! I usually paint the background first, and very carefully! You can also buy Masking FLuid, which blocks out any space you don't want the colour to run onto. Then, you can peel it off, and you have clean paper to work on

First of all, her hair is so real-looking, I can't imagine how you've painted it so flowing and beautiful... did you use just watercolours for her hair?
And the mermaids face is also very beautiful...
