I love rain. I love being at home and sleeping when it rains, and I love painting when it rains. I even don't mind being caught out in the rain! At the moment a monsoonal low has come down from the north and is threatening my area with floods.
But there's something that happens when it rains that greatly disturbs me. Worms can't live in saturated soil!
Before you write me off as a total loony, hear me out.
I was coming back from my afternoon walk in the rain with my dog, Jasper (don't worry guys, he was wearing a raincoat and he loves the rain and water in general). Walking up my cement driveway I suddenly noticed all these poor worms writhing in unutterable despair. They had crawled up on the cement to try to escape the waterlogged soil and were on their last legs...er, metaphorically or course.
I quickly took action and picked them all up (I rescued 8 in total) and took them to a large flower pot filled with lovely dry soil. They quickly disappeared.
I quite fancy myself opening a worm refuge (much like a worm farm except this is a safe place worms can go in time of need) and perhaps one day, when the ground is dry enough, I can release them back into the wild, hopefully without rehabilitation.
First thing tomorrow I am getting up to see if there are any more poor souls in need of a nice dry home, but it will probably be too late by then (it's been raining for a while now).

Don't forget the worms!!!
*UPDATE: Mere minutes within posting this journal, I walked outside and saved 13 more!
Saved worm tally: 21
